We created this page for people to find out what colors they prefer in Maine Coons. This breed comes in almost every color. However, masks (like in Siamese for example) and ticked tabby (like in Abyssinians for example) are not allowed.
The colors you see on this page are some of the common ones in Maine Coon cats. Maine Coons come in Tabby or Solid colors. There are two different types of Tabby pattern (stripes), called Mackerel tabby and Classic tabby. There are also many different Solid colors (without Tabby pattern), like Solid Black or Solid Red for example. Maine Coons come in Dense and Dilute Colors. Black for example is a Dense color. Blue for example is a Dilute Color. Silver is a Chapter by itself.
All cats on this page come from our own breedings. Enjoy!
A lot of people prefer "Dense" (darker) colors like Brown tabby for example. The boy above is a Brown Classic Tabby. Like all Maine Coons, those Brown Tabbies also come with white bibs, tummies and feet......lovely!!
Brown Tabby with White Franky/Jazzie F3 baby
Blue Tabby Sheba Baby
.......Other people prefer the softer Pastel or "Diluted" (lighter) colors like Blue tabby. Blue Tabby is the diluted form of Brown tabby. Cream Tabby would be the diluted form of Red Tabby for example.
The Solid (Non-Agouti or Non-Tabby) form of a Blue Tabby is Called a Solid Blue:
Blue Luisa/Brock F4 Baby
Blue White Jelly Roll PP x Tigger F5 baby
Torbies (also called Patch Tabbies) and Torties (their
Solid or Non-Tabby form) are multicolored beauties and many peoples' favorites. Torbies/Torties must be girls. There has been rare cases of a male Torbie/Tortie feline. Such a male will most likely be sterile.
Torbie/White F4 Sheba Baby
A Torbie/White (Patch Tabby/White) without a Tabby Pattern we call a Calico. In other words, Calico is the "Solid" form of a Patch Tabby (Torbie) with White.
Calico Sid/Cloche F2 baby
Torbies and Torties come in many forms and shades:
Blue Silver Mackerel Torbie
Coral/Pioneer F4 Baby
The diluted form of a Torbie is called a Blue Torbie.......... As previously mentioned, the dilution of the colors Red and Black will make them Cream and Blue. But to make it more complicated , this girl is actually a "Blue Silver Torbie", which adds the Silver inhibitor gene to a Blue Torbie female.
Silver is almost a whole topic in itself. It is not easy to breed good Silvers. Here is a georgeous Silver Tabby boy from the old fashioned Maine Coon type. This boy has a white bib and white paws.

Baby Wally
Silver Tabby Tempest/Pioneer Baby
This kitten is very dark Silver. People in Europe call this form of Silver Tabby "Black Silver Tabby".
Here is a Silver Torbie and White (remember the Torbie is the Tabby with the Red factor added):

There are several Silver variations like Silver tabby, Silver Torbie or Smoke:
Black Smoke Tigger x Prairiepaws PP Poly F6 Baby
...........Smoke being a Silver Tabby in it's Solid form - just to name a few. To get a Smoke cat, you take away the Tabby pattern to get a Solid cat. Then you ad the Silver to the Solid cat and the result is Smoke (a Solid Silver). :-)
Cameo Tabby Punkin Baby
Not to forget all the wonderful Red shades and the stunning Solid whites . Cameo tabby is another word for Red Silver Tabby, which says everything about it's genetic mix. Red Smoke would be the Solid Form of Red Silver (Cameo) Tabby. We don't have a picture of a Red Smoke.
Red Tabby Tempest/Pioneer Baby
Red (or Red Tabby) is - just like solid White - a color people either love or completely dislike. This beautiful boy is a flashy Classic Tabby. Remember there are two forms of Tabbies in Maine Coons - Classic and Mackerel.
Solid White
Frosty x Mersay F5 baby
We call the gene for solid White a "cover" gene. Most white cats have another invisible color "underneath" their white coat. That means they are "genetically" not White. White cats come either with copper, blue or odd eyes (one copper, one blue eye) and very rarely with green eyes.
Some people have a special love for Bi-Colors. One of the two colors in a Bi-colored cat must be white. The second color must be a Solid color (no Tabby pattern):
Black/White Polydactyl
Prairiepaws x Tigger F6 Baby
We have recently introduced the color Van into our breeding program. A Van is almost White with only a few small spots of coloring.
Blue Tortie Smoke Van
Polydactyl Dolly P/Coldoldbear F4 baby
This girl above has a rare Van color. She is a diluted Tortie (Blue Tortie) with the Silver gene which makes her a Blue Tortie Smoke (remember Smoke is the Solid form of Silver Tabby). The very high White content makes her a Van. So this girl would be a Tortie Smoke Van (is it getting too complicated?).
Below is a Cameo Mackerel Van boy:

There are several other colors, but this collection will give you a pretty good idea what colors and type of kittens we have to offer. You can find out more about this topic and also about the breed standard in CFA under the following link:
