This statement is still true to some extent.
The Maine Coon is a hardy and strong breed of cats. However, like in all purebred species, the gene pool in our breed is relatively small, which has lead to immune system-related and genetic problems. The only solution to prevent these potential defects is working with an outcrossed gene pool.
